a tale of vaginas, pregnant women, deliveries and babies...

6wks of o&g at MMH has finally come to an end...=)
6wks of antenatal clinics, gynae clinics, GDM clinics, colposcopy clinics, neonatal experiences, delivery suite experiences and numerous tutorials has culminated in a 15 station osce on thursday....=)
basically, all tht juz means - YAY! goodbye o&g, hello hollidays! =)

so...to sum up my 6wks....o&g in MMH is the most full-on experience ever! i mean, they expected us to attend every bloody tutorial, 5 12-hr delivery suite shifts, 2 acute nites, 5 antenatal clinics and 2 gynae clinics, amongst the other neonatal stuff...all this crammed into 25days! sheesh....talk about stretching it thin! so, here's a rough play-by-play account of the experience...

delivery suite
this was actually, surprisingly, the highlight of the run! i mean, granted, it had all the grossest stuff - show, poo, vaginas, and the likes - bt it was cool having tht privilage to help the mom in tht horribly painful time rite before when she was gonna pop! it was cool talking to them, helping the midwives, and finally catching the baby myself! =) yup, definately the highlight....

i guess wht also amazed me most is being at sth auckland, with their demographics, it shocked me tht some of the moms were my age! i had a couple of 23-y/o primips and even an 18 (!) y/o primip....bt amongst them all my favourite mom was a 41y/o samoan primip! she was awesome! i mean, its like she went for an antenatal class or something...she was soo cool, and for a primip, she was so easy! it made our already long and tiring nite feel really easy and happy..kudos to her! =)

haha...bt unlike my hsemate the siamese twin - whose hormones and maternal instincts juz bloomed and made her want to have kids of her own - the only instinct tht bloomed for me is the one where without a doubt, i DON'T wanna go thru wht ive seen these heroic moms go thru! dear god no....blurrghh.....

clinics
antenatal clinics - they were ok...got really good at examining the pregnant abdo and listening to baby's heart...=) i think the hi-lite and possibly the funniest part was during the last clinic, where 7 out of the 9 moms we saw were carrying twins! dr tout and i were juz laughing in amazement at the coincidence! bt yeah, pretty cool...

gynae clinic - went for 1 proper gynae clinic with dr wadsworth...pretty interesting...learnt quite a bit about menorrhagia and MEA....oh yeah, the patients were pretty "interesting" too....=)

cloposcopy clinic - this was definately worth my time. it was pretty cool to get a proper look at the cervix, especially with it magnified...and at least i finally knw wht the hell it is...=) and yeah, at least i also got to learn a new use for vinegar! =)

neonatal
now this was annoying in tht the compulsory teaching session every week clashed with my team's high risk obs clinic! cos of tht, we couldnt go for the clinics...bugger...bt on the upside, our bedside teaching with dr mildenhall was brilliant! he took us to see heaps of babies over at the neonatal ward and got to see lotsa diff conditions the babies had...it was definately sad seeing some of them...bt it was also amazaing seeing the prem babies! i mean, some of them were juz slightly bigger than my palm! it was definately an eye-opener...

on another side, at least i can now finally hold a baby! haha...yeah..it took me up to the final week, during my baby-check evaluation for me to be able to hold and turn the baby! i sweated like mad, bt at least i managed to carry and turn the baby without breaking it! =)

community midwife day-out
this was pretty cool and the midwife i was with - Fia - was nice...only saw 7 postnatal moms....and with my somewht newfound confidence, i managed to do the baby checks for all of them on my own! hahaa.....pretty cool...and it was such a relief when i did them all without dropping/breaking the little bubbas....=)

family planning clinic
as the name suggests, its basically a lot on contraception...lotsa repeat depos, and a couple of pills..one who wanted an ECP....nothing really major...bt i think the shocker was with the 18y/o who came in for a pregnancy check - cos she's been having unprotected sex with lotsa diff boys over the last wk - and she was afraid she would be preggers cos her actual partner was coming out of prison juz tht day! damn...drama, drama....bt c'mon, seriuosly! she's like high risk for STDs! - preggers or not - and only at 18!....*sigh*....
and i think the funniest here was when berny (the nurse) had to give me a compulsory condom application teaching session...dear god, i had to tahan ketawa to the max! =) she used a condom on a wooden penis thingy..and weird/funny as it was....i actually learnt something new! interesting...u always learn something new everyday! haha....

osce
it wasnt as bad as i expected...haha...in saying that, i definately fucked up a couple of stations..haha...well tht was expected of me...=) so yeah...managed to crap out some stuff....i guess im juz happy cos i knw i definately passed....distinction? haha....dream on...=)

so yeah...to wrap things up....o&g at mmh definately had its moments...
whtevr it is, im juz glad its over! =)
i juz dread having to do it again for 5wks as a TI nxt yr.....*crap*....
